AMVOTE ANNOUNCES PALOS TRUSTEE BRANNIGAN HAS RESIGNED FROM COOK COUNTY WOMEN’S COMMISSION AFTER POSTING NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT MIDDLE EASTERN IMMIGRANTS

BUT OUR WORK IS NOT DONE – BRANNIGAN SHOULD RESIGN AS TRUSTEE IN PALOS

Sharon Brannigan resigned her post on the Cook County Women’s Commission amid grass roots protests from Middle Eastern organizations over her controversial Facebook comments about Middle Eastern immigrants.

However, our job is not finished. AMVOTE calls for Brannigan to resign from the Palos Township Board of Trustees because she is unfit to represent the diverse community she was elected to serve.

During protests before the Palos Township Board of Trustees on July 10th, Rush Darwish (AMVOTE Executive Board member) was quoted in the Tribune as saying “For us, the outcome that the Muslim and Arab community wants is very simple. This trustee must resign. Must resign her post. And until that happens, this crowd you saw here tonight, you will continue seeing until that result is met.”

AMVOTE wishes to thank Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle who had called for Brannigan’s resignation on the Cook County Women’s Commission, saying “Such viewpoints certainly do not reflect our values nor, in my opinion, the kind of representation we want on the Commission”.

AMVOTE also wishes to thank the “coalition” of Middle Eastern organizations which led the protests against Brannigan in Palos Township, including Arab American Family Services (AAFS), Arab American Action, Network (AAAN), AMVOTE PAC, The Arab American Democratic club, and the numerous individuals who worked together and made our voices heard!
